Panoramic heads can be very expensive – in the $300 to $500 range for “name brand” heads. Several designs for closer to $100 are available on the web, but look a tad on the flimsy side. Building your own panoramic head for an SLR isn’t too hard or expensive. The parts for the design shown here cost about $10. Every part here is available at a store like Home Depot. Once you get past some of the misinformation out there, the only really hard part is figuring out the dimensions. The downside is that the mount is only useful for a specific camera/lens combo. On the other hand, you can’t mistakenly mess up one of the critical adjustments once you’ve built it, and the homemade mount is as light as a couple small pieces of wood.

How to Stop Accumulating Books - wikiHow
http://www.wikihow.com/Stop-Accumulating-Books
How to Stop Accumulating Books
Why would I stop accumulating books? I just need to trade and donate out some of my overflow that's all! Whats wrong with sagging shelves on every wall and boxes stacked all over the place? WHAT'S WRONG WITH IT? I would recommend AGAINST following most of the suggestions given in this article, other than giving away books no longer wanted. DO NOT put labels on your book spines or shelve different-sized books together (keep same-sized volumes together even if they are unrelated). I will eat your family if you do.
1. Cull your existing collection. Look in the yellow pages of your local phone book under "Books - Used." Sites like Amazon.com and Half.com allow individuals to sell books. break your books up into the following piles, and decide which ones get to stay: Reference books. Books you've already read, that you want to keep. Books you haven't read yet. Set a "read-to-purchase ratio". Make a “syllabus” of books to read. pick out the next 10-14 books you want to read. Make a "to buy" list. If you buy a book, immediately get rid of a book you already have. Use the library: most library systems will lend you books from anywhere in their system. Use the library for downloading ebooks: many libraries offer a service that allows you to download ebooks to your pc. Purchase and collect your books on an e-Book reader (like Kindle Wireless). If you have room for them and you still think "I'm going to read (or re-read) that someday", keep them.

How the Amish live against tide of technology.
Amish Hackers - Adopting Technology
For the sake of proof-of-concept, I'm glad the Amish exist. "Ivan is an Amish alpha-geek. He is always the first to try a new gadget or technique. He gets in his head that the new flowbitzmodulator would be really useful. He comes up with a justification of how it fits into the Amish orientation. So he goes to his bishop with this proposal: "I like to try this out." Bishop says to Ivan, "Okay Ivan, do whatever you want with this. But you have to be ready to give it up, if we decide it is not helping you or hurting others.""
Great article on the Amish community discernment process for adopting technology. Dispels a lot of myths, and gives a lot to think on.
Amish use the web at libraries (using but not owning). From cubicles in public libraries Amish sometimes set up a website for their business. So while Amish websites seem like a joke, there's quite a few of them. What about post-modern innovations like credit cards? A few Amish got them, presumably for their businesses at first. But over time the bishops noticed problems of overspending, and the resultant crippling interest rates. Farmers got into debt, which impacted not only them but the community since their families had to help them recover (that's what community and families are for). So, after a trial period, the elders ruled against credit cards. One Amish-man told me that the problem with phones, pagers, and PDAs (yes he knew about them) was that "you got messages rather than conversations." That's about as an accurate summation of our times as any. Henry, his long white beard contrasting with his young bright eyes told me, "If I had a TV, I'd watch it."

Did you know that some manufactures and suppliers will give away some free samples of their produces to customers and engineers to test them on their projects? They are some rules you should know before you start getting free samples from the companies: * You should never ask for more than you need, because you are not going to use the extra parts you are given, that means don't be greedy. * Taking free samples from the companies and selling them on places like ebay to make your self an profit is an absolute no-no (unless the company says you can do it). Those parts are meant to be used for your projects, NOT for resale. * Just to be fair to the companies where you got your samples from, buy some of their products.

Controllable Power Outlet by Nate | December 2, 2008 | 22 comments Controlling Big, Mean, Devices Microcontrollers are a ton of fun. Once I got hooked, there was no turning back. Initially playing with sensors and LCDs, I quickly discovered the limits to what a microcontroller could control. A microcontroller's GPIO (general purpose input/output) pins cannot handle higher power requirements. An LED was easy enough, but large power items such as light bulbs, toaster ovens, and blenders required more sneaky circuitry. Something sneaky called a relay: http://www.sparkfun.com/tutorial/Outlet/Outlet-1.jpg In this tutorial we will discuss a small relay board to control the power to a normal AC outlet using 5VDC control.

Anyone who has dug their old computer or console out of the cupboard or loft for some retro gaming will probably have noticed that it maybe hasn’t worn too well with the test of time. The plastics these machines were made of is called ABS and to make it flame retardant (just in case it catches fire after a marathon session) the plastics manufacturers added chemicals that caused the plastic turn yellow or, even worse, brown over a long period of time. It was originally thought that the yellowing was permanent and that the only solution to this was to paint the plastic in its original colour and cover the problem up. However...

At the center of this community are hacker spaces like Noisebridge, where like-minded geeks gather to work on personal projects, learn from each other and hang out in a nerd-friendly atmosphere. DIY Pizza: Cheaper, Tastier, More Fun | Food & Drink | Lifestyle | Mainstreet
http://mainstreet.com/article/lifestyle/food-drink/diy-pizza-cheaper-tastier-more-fun
In the food business, there’s a saying, "If you want to make money, make pizza." The ingredients cost next to nothing, and you’ve always got a market hungry for your product. Turn that logic around, and you’ve got an economic case for homemade pizza. Flour and packaged yeast are cheap, water is free (or close to it), and you probably already have the toppings in your fridge. A homemade pizza party can cost less than $2 per person. You can’t even get a slice for that these days.

Getting a good pizza from a decent pizzeria is pricey, and the El Cheapo Express frozen discs are often indistinguishable from their cardboard backing. Learn how to make your own without inheriting a wood-fired oven. Photo by Foodie. Writing for business blog Mainstreet, Allison hit the streets to find someone to teach her how to make a cheap and easy homemade pizza. Andrew, a food studies graduate student, was happy to oblige. In addition to sharing a recipe for the dough, he talks technique. While pizza places and ultra high-end home kitchens might have ovens built for pizza cooking, Andrew insists that the basic tools available in most kitchens are more than adequate to whip up a delicious pizza. The key to good pizza is heat, and lots of it. He has a cast iron griddle heating on the stovetop, and has turned the broiler on high with a rack four inches below the heating element. He cuts off a racquet-ball sized portion of the dough, and uses his fingers to stretch it, careful

Build Your Own Multitouch Surface Computer - Page 1 | Maximum PC
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/maximum_pc_builds_a_multitouch_surface_computer?page=0%2C0
It all started while we were researching an article on future user interfaces. Touch interfaces are hardly futuristic at this point, but multi-touch hardware like the Microsoft Surface or the iPhone is just starting to become a big deal, and we decided to see what big things are going on in that field. What we found that surprised us the most wasn’t anything about the future of multitouch; it was about something that people are doing right now.

Most of these can be done at home in your spare time in your spare space, too. Ready? See if there are any ideas below that fit you well. Cold-Brewed Iced Coffee « The Internet Food Association
http://internetfoodassociation.com/2009/04/12/cold-brewed-iced-coffee/
I like coffee, but I love iced coffee, especially since I learned how to cold-brew it at home. This requires a bit more advance planning than turning your coffee machine on in the morning, but it’s much more flavorful than a hot-brewed coffee and since normal people’s coffee consumption follows a predictable pattern (it’s morning, I want coffee) it’s not hard to plan ahead.
Got 12 hours? You can have iced coffee!

How cost-effective is it to make pantry staples from scratch? - By Jennifer Reese - Slate Magazine
http://www.slate.com/id/2216611/pagenum/all/#p2
Although I love to cook, I've always secretly, darkly, suspected it is costlier to craft at home what you can buy at Ralph's. Obviously, homemade bread tastes better than Wonder, but does playing Martha Stewart really save you money? While packaged food is
It's easy to find recipes for homemade yogurt, granola, and other common groceries, but far harder to know, cent for cent, if making them really saves money. One Slate writer did the math for us. Jennifer Reese is a dedicated home cook, but was suspicious that there were some home recipes on which she couldn't beat the big-time manufacturers for cost. So she tried out notable recipes for bagels, cream cheese, yogurt, jam, crackers, and granola, and compared her cost to a standard grocery store price, as well as noted how they tasted side by side. Here's Reese's revelation about Alton Brown's granola recipe pitted against even a premium brand like Bear Naked:

Lifehacker - Top 10 Battery Hacks, Tips, And Tricks - Batteries
The gadgets you love don't always love you back—at least when it comes to battery life. But you can get more from your laptop, your iPod, your phone, and other devices with these 10 techniques. Photo by conskeptical. 10. Turn C batteries into Ds with quarters Only a few things ever need D batteries, but who has them handy when you need those things? If you've got some slightly more handy C batteries around, you only need a few quarters to turn them into makeshift Ds. You won't get the same longevity, and you'll have to part with up to $1.50 for a bit, but it works, and it might just turn you into the family hero when you rescue that seemingly useless big-lens flashlight. 9. Keep your iPod "held" and updated If you haven't hit the "Update" button since you got your iPod, old or new, fire up iTunes and do so—the newest firmware, in many cases, can boost your battery life. Once you've done that, run through Playlist Magazine's battery saving tips, which include keeping backlighting, th

DIY Cardboard Laptop Stand | greenUPGRADER

Get your laptop off the table and stop hunching over to see the screen with this DIY cardboard laptop stand. It’s small, light, free & green and it will help you cut down on the trips to the chiropractor. Did I mention it’s super easy to make? I originally found this idea at Thingiverse.com, where Erik Skiff whipped up a pretty cool acrylic stand. I didn’t have any acrylic and more importantly I didn’t have a lazer cutter make the cuts, so I did it on cardboard. I modified the design a little so the pattern would fit on a regular letter sized sheet of paper.

Stylish and easy to make bookshelf
http://www.instructables.com/id/Stylish_and_easy_to_make_bookshelf/
I'm quite happy with that fact that the first piece of furniture I built is a bookshelf. I wanted to make something large enough to keep all my books, and stylish at the same time. The design I like is somewhat futuristic, with plenty curved lines and you can see that in this shelf. Generally it looks as if it was a part of the wall, or came out of the wall.
If you're looking for some budget-friendly shelving, this DIY solution will definitely look more elegant in your living space than some shop shelves from the hardware store. This particular mortise style shelving unit requires less wedging but a finer use of a saw blade—assuming, of course, you want the really cool wave in your vertical braces. The entire project requires nothing more than a few boards, long screws, a drill, and a jigsaw. Paint or varnish is optional, depending on the cut and quality of wood you use a simple clear coat might suffice. The entire affair is held against the wall with only three screws, the bottom of the braces rest on the floor to distribute the load, and the screws are hidden within the mortise joints. In regard to the stability and strength, the author of the Instructable SimonF notes that since he wrote the tutorial and took the photo you see here he has loaded even more stuff on the shelves without any issues.

Shooting Portraits like a Pro On a Budget

great ideas
In this post portrait photographer Alexis Godschalk shares some tips on shooting studio like portraits on a budget by talking us through a shoot he did with a band recently. portraits-budget.jpg When I started doing photography years ago, I really wanted to shoot fantastic shots, I wanted to make sure that my photographs would be considered for a gallery showing. All I had was Canon 10D and a flash. Most of what I shot was candid and in the style of photo journalism and even though this was fine I wanted more. What kept me from shooting clean studio like portraits was the mistaken belief that I needed loads of expensive equipment. One day a friend of mine approached me about photographing his band. He had just gotten new management and wanted to make the band band look pro. He started by showing me some photography he liked and we started talking about what could and could not be done. One of the shots he like was a clean shot with dramatic lighting again a black background. I told

Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | Spring Cleaning Tip #10: Make A Cleaning Schedule
http://www.re-nest.com/re-nest/cleaning/spring-cleaning-tip-10-make-a-cleaning-schedule-085958
It's almost the end of May, and the end of Cleaning Month. So, until next year when we clean again...! No, no, just kidding. We hope you clean your house at least once before May 2010 (preferably even a few more times than that). Now that you've invested time and energy into deep cleaning your house, set a schedule for keeping it clean. Regular maintenance will cut down on the "ugh" factor. After all, one-hour cleaning increments are much easier to deal with than five-hour cleaning marathons.
This is taken straight from Maxwell's Eight-Step Home Cure: Daily Schedule:

This project is my dad's $10 solution to a $500 solution to a $25,000 problem. As I have previously mentioned around the site, my Dad owns an electric 1979 Ford Courier pickup, and is cool enough to let me drive it around. We absolutely love it, and wouldn't trade it for a Tesla Roadster, but one of the few problems with electric cars is heating and cooling. In a gas car, heat is provided by the 80% of the gas that is wasted as heat, and air conditioning is provided by a crankshaft-driven compressor system. Many EVs use hair dryer elements and fans for heat, and some, ours included, feature a powerful gasoline-burning heater.

Lifehacker - Repel Flies with a Bag of Water - Annoyances

Evidently, houseflies, being highly edible and defenseless, are nervous types, and don't like to sit still when they see something moving nearby, because it could be a predator. The water bag acts a bit like a lens—try it some time—in which the movements of people in the area are reflected. Even if the fly is too far from the action to see it directly, it can see a shifting of light and dark in the water bag, which it interprets as nearby movement, and it will fly away from the bag.

How-to: Build a Blu-ray / TV tuner-equipped HTPC for under $1,000
http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/21/how-to-build-a-blu-ray-tv-tuner-equipped-htpc-for-under-1-00/
Pundits may argue that the modern day HTPC has no place in the modern day living room, but we disagree. In fact, with the economy still struggling to regain its swagger, folks are staying in and finding entertainment at home more than ever. It's that truth that spurred us to start this here project: building a fully capable, Blu-ray and TV tuner-equipped HTPC for less than a grand. And lo and behold, we made it happen. If you're interested in seeing exactly how we pieced together a mighty fine entertainment box for less than the starting price of most pre-configured systems, hop on past the break with your notepad open. If you'll recall, we did a similar piece on HTPC building way back in early 2006. A format war and a digital TV transition later, we figured it was finally time to issue a revised edition. With disposable income becoming an increasingly rare commodity, we put a soft $1,000 cap on our model rig, and we did our darnedest to construct a solid, potent media PC that could

How to install a CableCARD tuner in your DIY Media Center
http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/05/12/how-to-install-a-cablecard-tuner-in-your-diy-media-center/
It should go without saying that in order for this to work you'll need a pretty new computer running either Windows Vista Premium (or higher) or Windows 7 as well as an ATI Digital Cable Tuner (DCT). The first requirement you probably already have, but the second can be a bit more difficult. Both the internal and external version of the DCT have the same functionality with the only real difference being where it is mounted. Some prefer the external since it is easier to swap out and doesn't require opening the case to install, while others will do just about anything to eliminate yet another box with a wall wart from their setup. We will warn you if you're leaning towards the internal though, it is pretty big and puts off some heat. So to accommodate the internal version you're going to need a decent size case as well as an internal USB port and free floppy power plug. Not for everyone

Top 10 Tricks MacGyver Would Be Proud Of - MacGyver - Lifehacker
http://lifehacker.com/5342899/top-10-tricks-macgyver-would-be-proud-of
Lifehacker.com
Out in the countryside, MacGyver and the son of an esteemed diplomat are tired, exhausted, and hungry after dismantling a tank and escaping a military prison with corrugated cardboard, vanilla extract, and a magnet-tipped screwdriver. They have no matches or fuel to start a fire, but they did ransack a few items from the galley kitchen on the way out. With a 9-volt battery or cellphone sparked against some steel wool, or a pop-top can and chocolate, they're well on their way to getting a little flame built. (Original posts: chocolate and Coke, cellphone battery, steel wool and 9-volt).
When they draw up the Complete History of Lifehacking, Angus MacGyver will certainly merit a chapter. We pay tribute to the creative can-do secret agent this week with 10 tricks that make extraordinary use of truly common objects.

15 Places to Make Money Creating Your Own Products
http://mashable.com/2009/09/05/sell-products-online/
Creating your own products used to mean a significant up-front investment — purchasing a minimum amount of the product as dictated by the manufacturer, paying for warehousing, packaging, point-of-sale systems, and other overhead costs. And that was all before you even took a single order! Thankfully, for many types of products, print-on-demand technologies have made it possible for anyone to create and sell goods over the Internet with little or no up-front costs. Below is a roundup of 15 great print-on-demand sites that will help you create and sell everything from t-shirts to clocks, from books to skateboards, from board games to fabric. If you know of additional print-on-demand sites to make and sell your own products, let us know in the comments.

How to Build a Kick-Ass MAME Arcade Cabinet from an Old PC | Maximum PC
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/how_build_kickass_mame_arcade_rig_old_pc_pics
If you were born in the 70s or 80s, chances are good that a big part of your childhood was spent wasting quarters at the local arcade, or in front of the Pac-Man machine at your local pizza place. Sure, games have become a lot more complex since then, but the old titles had a lot of charm, and in some cases a level of skill and patience-rewarding challenge that hasn’t been matched since. Sadly, the arcade is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. Now that PCs and game consoles have become so powerful, the only way for arcades to compete has been to offer games with enormous, complicated controls, which end up costing a dollar or more per play. And besides, that’s only if you happen to live next to one of the very few remaining full-sized arcades. For most people, the closest thing they’ve got to an arcade is the worn-out Initial D machine at their local multiplex.
XArcade that make great pre-made units at reasonable prices. Save yourself a lot of aggravation :) Side and front machine 'Marquees' and overlays make your machine look great, check out www.mamemarquees.com Buy a 'frontloader' application that will handle all emulator switching and controls. For $25 I picked up a copy of Maximus Arcade at www.maximusarcade.com and it looks and works awesome. You can switch seamlessly through forty or fifty emulators like Mame, Daphne (Laser Disc Games), Stella (Atari 2600), etc. Pick up a "Smart" power strip. These strips have one outlet that will automatically turn on the power to all the other outlets if the device in the original socket turns on

Techies are too often tempted by the lure of new technology, leaving perfectly good hardware drifting in the wake of compulsive upgrading. And while we love getting new gadgets as much as the next geek, we also like how a new purchase gives us the opportunity to take apart and tinker with our older gear in the Lab. Whether it’s by soldering circuit boards or loading open-source firmware, we pride ourselves on being able to stretch the lifespan of older electronics by performing undocumented (and sometimes warranty-breaking) hardware hacks.

Your PC’s hard drive is probably packed to the platter’s edge with hundreds of ripped DVD videos, gigabytes of digital photos from your camera, and tens of thousands of songs. And that’s not even counting the high-definition digital video from your last family vacation that you’re still planning to unload. But with terabytes of media just gathering dust on your desktop PC, you risk losing years of aggregated files when your hard drive inevitably gives out (don’t even think about backing it all up to the cloud). Our solution: Keep all your data backed up on a Windows Home Sever. More than just a generic NAS box, Windows Home Server maintains backups, streams media files, and works as a file share across your home network. And the best part is that you can build one yourself—we’ll show you how!

iTunesLP.net - About
http://ituneslp.net/
hoe een itunes lp te html-en
iTunes LPs are a new format introduced by Apple in version 9.0 of their popular iTunes software. The idea is to recreate the old LP experience by providing additional content such a lyrics, liner notes, photographs and other content. At this moment these iTunes LPs are available for a select list of new releases on the iTunes store. However we think it would be nice to have many older, out-of-print, obscure albums or albums on indie-labels to get the same experience; and with that in mind we started working on finding out exactly how this new format works, in order to share our results with the community.
Site that provides tutorials and resources on how to write the stuff for iTunes LP, which is a sort of iTunes + which is designed for liner notes but is cool for basically little html type packages.

Scrap Table
http://www.instructables.com/id/Scrap-Table
There are many methods for laminating wood -- this project focuses on a down-and-dirty method for those of us who do not own a lot of pipe clamps and other heavy duty hardware for wrestling with wild wood.  It is about ten feet long by thirty inches wide, sitting about thirty inches off the ground.  If you can salvage the wood, the other materials aren't too expensive: five threaded rods, about four bucks each; nuts, washers, and screws; a gallon or so of wood glue; sandpaper; and polyurethane.  All told, it was less than one hundred dollars.
There's a lot of wood out in the world free for the taking -- in dumpsters, back alleys, vacant lots, abandoned buildings, recycling yards, and architectural salvage centers. Most wood, if free from rot, is just as strong, durable, and good to use as new wood, once you sand off the weathering. This table was made from all salvaged wood -- both dimensional lumber and plywood, mostly taken from decaying buildings in and around Hale County, Alabama.

Secret Knock Detecting Door Lock - Made by Steve Hoefer
http://grathio.com/2009/11/secret-knock-detecting-door-lock.html
Weil Türen durch geheime Klopfzeichen aufgehen sollten.
While working on another project I ran across the Arduino knock sensor tutorial. Sensing a single knock is a great little project for learning about microcontrollers, but what about sensing specific knocks? Seeeeecret knocks? And if we could detect a secret knock, shouldn't it unlock a door? If you can't tell by looking this was cobbled together from spare stuff around the lab, it's not much more than a piezo speaker, a tiny gear reduction motor, and an Arduino. And PVC pipe.

Very neat contraption that can unlock your door based on a programmed knock. Not very practical but still pretty awesome.

http://tipnut.com/wasp-trap/
An inexpensive way to make a wasp trap.
If you’ve ever been stung by a wasp, you know they live up to their reputation of being aggressive and having painful stings. When you regularly spot wasps in your yard, chances are there’s a wasp’s nest on your property or nearby. These are not pests that you want hanging about, especially if you have children running around. The best way to get rid of wasps is to find the nest and destroy it, but if you can’t find it or if it’s not on your property, you can use wasp traps to tempt them away from high-traffic areas to another part of the yard to kill them.
A great (and simple) wasp (and fruit fly) trap.

Make an iPhone dock out of paperclips. Sweet. http://tinyurl.com/lftqde [from http://twitter.com/shawnroos/statuses/2357122299]
You've tamed the mess underneath and behind your desk with one of our tips, but how do you deal with that pesky cable that slips out of reach as soon as you unplug it from a device? Simple: grab a binder clip, undo one of the metal handles, slip that pesky cord inside, put the metal handle back into its place, and clip the entire gadget to the edge of your desk. Problem solved.

In the Next Industrial Revolution, Atoms Are the New Bits | Magazine
http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/01/ff_newrevolution/all/1
Hardware is becoming much more like software.
The door of a dry-cleaner-size storefront in an industrial park in Wareham, Massachusetts, an hour south of Boston, might not look like a portal to the future of American manufacturing, but it is. This is the headquarters of Local Motors, the first open source car company to reach production. Step inside and the office reveals itself as a mind-blowing example of the power of micro-factories.
“In the age of democratized industry, every garage is a potential micro-factory, every citizen a potential micro-entrepreneur 1) INVENT dream up your own. Pro tip: Check the PTO first 2) DESIGN Use free tools like Blender or Google’s SketchUp to create a 3-D digital model of your invention. Or download someone else’s design and incorporate your groundbreaking tweaks. 3) PROTOTYPE desktop 3-D printers like MakerBot are available for under $1,000. Just upload a file and watch the machine render your vision in layered ABS plastic. 4) MANUFACTURE The garage is fine for limited production, to go big, global — outsource. Factories in China are standing by; sites like Alibaba.com can help you find the right partner. 5) SELL Market your product directly to customers via an online store like SparkFun — or set up your own ecommerce outfit through a company like Yahoo or Web Studio. Then haul your golden goose to Maker Faire and become the poster child for the DIY industrial revolution.”

DIY at home genetic engineering movement has begun
"Co-founder Mackenzie Cowell, a 24-year-old who majored in biology in college, said amateurs will probably pursue serious work such as new vaccines and super-efficient biofuels, but they might also try, for example, to use squid genes to create tattoos that glow."
"Many of these amateurs may have studied biology in college but have no advanced degrees and are not earning a living in the biotechnology field. Some proudly call themselves "biohackers" — innovators who push technological boundaries and put the spread of knowledge before profits."

Making Your Own Flavored Oils - The Atlantic Food Channel

How to create a quick infused olive oil.
This is a great method for making small amounts of flavored oils for use at the last minute as embellishments for soups, vegetables, and simple fish dishes. It works best with soft, fresh, fragrant ingredients like tender herbs, garlic, or grated citrus zest. Extra-virgin olive oil, subtly infused with lemon zest, is one of my favorites. There is no set formula for making these oils. The ratio of flavoring to oil will depend on the intensity of the ingredients you choose. Since they flavor the oil quickly, you can taste and add more flavorings, if you wish. These oils are splendid on many foods -- practically anything you would dress with olive oil.

iris. This pinhole ensures that the light which reaches any position on the exposure surface originated from a single direction; as the hole diameter approaches zero, the possible light source for a point on the exposure surface becomes an increasingly narrow cone, approaching a straight line. The result is that if you make the hole small enough, you can capture a very wide depth of field, with objects both near and far in focus. The small hole also reduces the amount of light that reaches the exposure surface, in this case a CCD, so you need to compensate with a very long exposure time. It's a perfect tool for capturing slow movement over time, or taking rich photos of still scenes that require a huge depth

I’ve always wanted my own supercomputer. Let’s be honest, what self-respecting geek doesn’t? Unfortunately, I’m usually poor, and I live in a space that’s ~300 ft^2 (that I share with someone else), so actually owning anything considered a supercomputer is out of the question. Fortunately, “Supercomputers” from the 1980’s weren’t actually all that complicated, and cheap FPGA boards have gotten pretty good. And thus, I give you the Non-Von1. What is the Non-Von 1? For those out there that love both retro computing and weird computer architectures, this one is for you. The “Non-Von” was a “Non-Von Neumann” computer that came out of Columbia University in the early 1980’s.
A supercomputer that does NOT use the Von Neumann architecture...lemme at it!

Lifehacker - Build a $14 Video Camera Stabilizer - Video camera
http://lifehacker.com/5272748/build-a-14-video-camera-stabilizer
How does the DIY model provide smooth video? Instead of the complex arrangement of balancing mechanisms, resistance bands, and springs, the DIY stabilizer relies on a simpler system. Your arms and a counter weight at the bottom of the stabilizer work together to minimize the movement. Camera shake is radically reduced when the weight of the camera is offset by a equal or slightly heavier weight at the bottom. Sound about right for your needs? You'll need some pipe, a disc weight, some hand tools and a power drill to put this one together. For photos and a step by step build guide, check out the PDF below. If you need to stabilize video in a car, check out how to make a dashboard stabilizer out of a sponge.

Then pour it into heat-proof bowls and cook (in a water bath or steamer) until it sets like custard. That is it. There's no heating the soy milk to bring it to a certain temperature before adding the nigari. No separating liquids from solids. No straining once it's cooked.

"There is nothing more frustrating in the kitchen than a dull knife. Not only does it make prep work a chore and your finished product less attractive, it's also downright dangerous. A dull blade requires more pressure to cut into a food, and can easily slip off of a tough onion skin and into your finger. Ouch. Most home cooks should sharpen their knives at least twice a year, and much more frequently if they use their knives every day. There are three ways to go about it. Geek Gardening: A Wired Guide to Domestic Terraforming | Magazine | Wired.com
http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/05/ff_domestic_terraforming/
"Gardeners are among the world's most charming snobs. Rightly so: As with music and mathematics, the more you know, the more elegant your work. Erudition is valued, and so is a smattering of pretension. If you are a geek looking to put down roots, welcome to gardening. We offer you common ground. Think of it as localized terraforming, if that helps. Before you start, though, contemplate your knees and knuckles, and get ready for hard, sweaty work. As with making babies, people can't really imagine what they are getting into when they plan to tangle with the trowels and hoses. The sketches and explanations on the following pages will inspire you to stake out, nurture, and defend your tiny patch of Earth, feed your loved ones, and even sequester a bit of carbon. How smart is that?"
