The Text Layout Framework deserves an article of its own as it will be used by most developers but the intent of this article is to give an understanding of how the engine itself works. The new text engine flash.text.engine was built from the ground-up. It co-exists with the current TextField object but works differently: it is a low-level access, highly flexible text layout engine.
