Create Vimeo-like top navigation

I really like the top navigation implemented on Vimeo.com. First time I saw it I wanted to recreate it. And this is exactly what I am going to do in this tutorial. What I like the most is the menu that drops down when you hover search box. It offers you different search options that you can choose and narrow your search.

Below, we create a range of button types that frequently appear in application interfaces — stand-alone buttons, toggles, and buttons grouped into multi-function toolbars — and use classes from the framework to demonstrate how you can leverage the CSS for non-jQuery elements. We tested the sample markup and the framework CSS to ensure that styles render the same whether the button markup is the actual button form element (<button>), a link (<a>), or any other tag that makes sense for your particular application.

TED: MIT Students Turn Internet Into a Sixth Human Sense -- Video | Epicenter from Wired.com
http://blog.wired.com/business/2009/02/ted-digital-six.html
In the tactile world, we use our five senses to take in information about our environment and respond to it, Maes explained. But a lot of the information that helps us understand and respond to the world doesn't come from these senses. Instead, it comes from computers and the internet. Maes' goal is to harness computers to feed us information in an organic fashion, like our existing senses. The prototype was built from an ordinary webcam and a battery-powered 3M projector, with an attached mirror -- all connected to an internet-enabled mobile phone. The setup, which costs less than $350, allows the user to project information from the phone onto any surface -- walls, the body of another person or even your hand.
Holy crap.

Cooper Journal: One free interaction
http://www.cooper.com/journal/2009/01/one_free_interaction.html
Yes! I think a free interaction gives the user experience that special edge.
"One free interaction" is a prospective design pattern that gives software and hardware a more humane feel. It exists outside of task flows and the concept of users as task-doers. Instead it sits in the "in between" spaces, suiting users as fidgeters, communicators, and people who play with things.
Very nice post from Chris Noessel of Cooper Design on the more subtle but no less brilliant elements of iPhone design, as well as other simple, pleasing software highlights
I flip page control on the home screen back and forth, for no apparent reason.
"Since we want our designs to be humane and, presuming they fulfill their utilitarian purposes well, emotionally satisfying, I suggest that designers begin to include one free interaction in their designs to enable the channeling of energy and simple expression."

CompareNetworks jQuery'd Bread Crumb - jBreadCrumb
http://www.comparenetworks.com/developers/jqueryplugins/jbreadcrumb.html
This collapsible breadcrumb was developed to deal with deeply nested, verbosely named pages. Rather than limit the amount of elements shown on the sever side, we decided to go with a client side solution for usability and SEO reasons. It also turned out nice to look at and fun to play with. It is smart in the sense that it collapses based upon the amount and length of the elements in the set. The breadcrumb uses a semitransparent .png overlay to achieve the gradient effect seen on the elements. Visually, it helps to show a "peek" at what is underneath.

Previous and Next Actions in Web Forms

Before I get too far along in a discussion of prototyping, it's probably worth exploring what I'm talking about. In the world of designing interactive products and services, prototype is generally defined as some representation of a design idea. In the world of physical products, the term tends to connote something quite similar to the finished manufactured form. Indeed, industrial designers use the term model to describe what interaction designers think of as a prototype.

Great article about how good design really works
We’ve all seen arguments in the design community that dismiss the role of beauty in visual interfaces, insisting that good designers base their choices strictly on matters of branding or basic design principles. Lost in these discussions is an understanding of the powerful role aesthetics play in shaping how we come to know, feel, and respond.

Progressive Enhancement is a powerful methodology that allows Web developers to concentrate on building the best possible websites while balancing the issues inherent in those websites being accessed by multiple unknown user-agents. Progressive Enhancement (PE) is the principle of starting with a rock-solid foundation and then adding enhancements to it if you know certain visiting user-agents can handle the improved experience.

I rolled up the autocomplete plugin (Rein + Yehuda) of my last few posts with the Facebook style text list (Guillermo) of my autobox post. We’re calling it Autobox2: click here to see the demo. Then, download it: jquery.ui.autobox-0.7.1.zip Updated 12/11 (see comments) jquery.ui.autobox-0.7.0.zip Although it is missing some of the behavior of autobox1, it’s a more solid and extendable implementation. It also fixes what is in my mind the most glaring problem of autobox1, the fact that it needed the entire list in the initial ajax call. Autobox2 makes AJAX calls the same way that the autocomplete one does, makes a server call with the current contents of the input box. This is the way you would expect. I will no longer be releasing any more changes to Autobox1 and you can consider it deprecated. (I’ve noted this on the main Autobox1 post.) As to the implementation, it is based on the Rein and Yehuda’s autocomplete plugin as detailed in 2 previous posts. There were a few things borrowe

Designing for Faceted Search
http://www.uie.com/articles/faceted_search
Faceted search, or guided navigation, has become the de facto standard for e-commerce and product-related websites, from big box stores to product review sites. But e-commerce sites aren’t the only ones joining the facets club. Other content-heavy sites such as media publishers (e.g. Financial Times: ft.com), libraries (e.g. NCSU Libraries: lib.ncsu.edu/), and even non-profits (e.g. Urban Land Institute: uli.org) are tapping into faceted search to make their often broad-range of content more findable. Essentially, faceted search has become so ubiquitous that users are not only getting used to it, they are coming to expect it.

9 Crucial UI Features of Social Media and Networking Sites | How-To | Smashing Magazine
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/06/03/9-crucial-ui-features-of-social-media-and-networking-sites/
The main function of a good user interface is to provide users with an intuitive mapping between user’s intention and application’s function that manages to provide a solution to the given task. Basically, user interface describes the way people interact with a site and the way users can access its functions. In fact, usability is a biproduct of a good user interface and it determines how easily a user can perform all of the functions provided by the site. Usability is a crucial part of every design, especially on websites with a large amount of functions and users.

discussion of the use of module tabs or subtabs within a page
The most extensive post I've seen on Tabs, ever. Well done SM.
Module tabs are seeing an increase of use as websites and web applications push for optimizing web page screen areas without sacrificing the amount of information presented at once. For example, in weblogs, they are used in secondary content sections (such as the sidebar) to present relevant and interesting information such as a listing of blog posts which users can interact with to get to web pages quicker. This inevitably allows for an unobtrusive and compact manner of presenting content. This article discusses the use of the module tabs design pattern for use in websites and web-based applications. We share with you some best practices to consider when using module tabs, a listing of real-world examples of websites the take advantage of module tabs, as well as tutorials and free downloadable scripts for building and deploying module tabs in your sites.
Stop Password Masking (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox)

Advice about how masking password entries can reduce usability and increase user error and frustration.
Jakob comes out against password masking
More importantly, there's usually nobody looking over your shoulder when you log in to a website. It's just you, sitting all alone in your office, suffering reduced usability to protect against a non-issue.
Got to agree with Jakob here. Seing *****'s as you type your password just leads to mistyped passwords
Can I get an Amen?
I question the overall security of an app if the input isn't masked. Logically, he makes sense, but users aren't asking for it. Leave it be.

Firefox 3 was released on June 17, 2008, and from that time, Firefox 2 browser share is quickly dropping. Very soon it will become inefficient to continue supporting it. And we will be able to use a lot of new Firefox 3 features, such as canvas support, CSS and DOM improvements and other. I am really glad that Firefox3 supports the “contentEditable” property. Setting this attribute to “true” allows you to make parts of a document editable. This attribute was already supported by IE6/7/8, Safari, Chrome and Opera. So now we can start using it in our applications.

Pretty nifty before/after image slider in javascript
About a month ago I was reading the New York Times online and they had an article which showed a road in Brooklyn that had been reconstructed to make it safer and more pleasing to the eye. To show the difference in the reconstruction project, they showed a before and after picture using Flash that let the visitor drag a slider over the images, which were sandwiched with one on top of the other, so that you could easily see how dramatic the changes were. I immediately thought that this could be done in JavaScript using jQuery, so I set out to do it.

HTML5 drag and drop in Firefox 3.5 – 0xDECAFBAD
http://decafbad.com/blog/2009/07/15/html5-drag-and-drop
Since it’s so fundamental, offering drag and drop in web applications has been a no-brainer ever since browsers first offered mouse events in DHTML. But, although mousedown, mousemove, and mouseup made it possible, the implementation has been limited to the bounds of the browser window. Additionally, since these events refer only to the object being dragged, there’s a challenge to find the subject of the drop when the interaction is completed.
Drag and drop is one of the most fundamental interactions afforded by graphical user interfaces. In one gesture, it allows users to pair the selection of an object with the execution of an action, often including a second object in the operation. It’s a simple yet powerful UI concept used to support copying, list reordering, deletion (ala the Trash / Recycle Bin), and even the creation of link relationships.

Designing Convertbot - Tapbots Blog

With the surprising success of Weightbot, it was only a matter of time before we would take on the challenge of outdoing ourselves. We knew people were expecting something big from Tapbots the second time around so what’s more impressive on the iPhone platform than a unit converter? Pretty much anything. In name alone, Convertbot is probably the last application people would expect to see from us. But the truth is, converting units, while extremely ordinary, is a very useful utility for many people. And while there are countless feature-rich unit converters for the iPhone, none of them make the task any more enjoyable. So it really was the perfect robot for us to build. I just wanted to spend a little time writing about how Convertbot came to be. Getting Started The first step was to set up the groundwork for the application. What is the primary purpose of this application? Who is the target audience? What are the bare minimum features this app needs and what features can we add that

User interface (UI) patterns have the potential to make software development more efficient. The prospect of such efficiency gains has led to interest in user interface (UI) patterns by individuals and organizations looking for ways to increase quality while at the same time reducing the costs associated with software development. The very nature of UI patterns requires that they be familiar to end-users. An individual UI pattern is a discrete, repeatable unit of user experience. I refer to collection of patterns as a library.

ZURB – Making Forms Convert Through Awesome Inline Labels
http://www.zurb.com/article/271/making-forms-convert-through-awesome-inli
Nice technique to use on labels in forms.
nline labels are nothing new – in fact the easiest way to label a field is to simply set the field value up front and blow it away when the field gains focus. Easy, right? But what if the browser focuses on the first field right off the bat...what field is it? The label is gone, so to find out what we're supposed to type we have to switch out, then back...what a terrible interaction! This little jolt could be the difference between a conversion and an abandoned form. Happily, there's a better way.

http://johnnyholland.org/magazine/2009/08/the-iphone-is-not-easy-to-use-a-peek-into-the-future-of-experience-design/
iPhones fly off the shelves despite being difficult to learn. Why? Because they let you do what it says you can do and they make you happy while you do it. This proves that my job as a user experience designer has evolved rather than simply changed. While it’s still my responsibility to prevent things from sucking, now it’s also my responsibility to add a little playfulness. As Kim Goodwin said in her Interaction09 keynote, we have a limited window in which to prove how valuable design can be to business. There are three ways in which user experience designers can learn to incorporate play into the systems they design. Experience and Research Play You can’t build playfulness into your designs without experiencing playfulness yourself. Play games and pay attention to what makes them fun. For example, the only rule in the card game Fluxx is that the rules constantly change. Completing a level in Peggle gives you the “Ode to Joy,” rainbows, unicorns, and fireworks!

Look out for them in your software, hunt down the developer and force them to read a book about user interface design. If you’re suitably senior, force them to a) improve it, or even better b) get someone with real UI experience to fix it.

In this column, I’ve presented five best practices for designing filters for faceted search results. Of these, I think the first—choosing either drill-down or parallel selection—is the most important. If you choose your filter value-selection paradigm correctly, you are already half way there.

Recently, Office Depot redesigned their search user interface, adding attribute-based filtering and creating a more dynamic, interactive user experience. Unfortunately, Office Depot’s interaction design misses some key points, making their new search user interface less usable and, therefore, less effective. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the Office Depot site presents us with an excellent case study for demonstrating some of the important best practices for designing filters for faceted search results, as follows:

There is always a minor problem when it comes to preloading image on a website. Nobody really has a full solution for it. There are a lot of preloaders available, but most of the time they only display the words: Loading page or have an animated image that spins. Why can't there be a nice loading bar of some kind? I've gotten a few request on how to make a preloader, or people asking me how to get all the images of a web page and preload them (even the images in CSS). This preloader has it all. Loading bar, custom animations and getting all images included in the web page.

TidBITS Macs & Mac OS X: Revealing Mac OS X's Hidden Single-Application Mode
http://db.tidbits.com/article/10624
This is absolutely brilliant. I've just enabled it on my work Mac, which generally has 10+ apps running. (Browser, Mail, IDE, chat client, iCal, spreadsheet, DB client, RSS reader, terminal, iTunes, PDF reader, various others), and suddenly my level of visual clutter is down to near zero.
Having returned from an archeological dig into the dark history of Mac OS X, I've unearthed a feature that could change the way you interact with your applications, enabling you to focus on one or two more easily than in the past. Back in 1999, when Steve Jobs first showed off the new Finder in Mac OS X, it ran in a single-application mode, where switching from one application to another caused the first application to minimize (this was the original demo of the Genie effect1). This was intended to be the default behavior, but it was so widely reviled that Apple quickly changed the default to the familiar multi-application mode that shows multiple applications on the screen at the same time. Mac OS X's multi-application mode differed from how previous versions of the Mac OS worked in that it interleaved all open windows without regard to which application they belonged to, a feature that annoyed a lot of long-time Mac users.

But if you take measures first to reduce actual complexity and then to minimize perceived complexity, the user will be rewarded with a gratifying experience."

Doh! %&^%&^%&! Another forehead-smack-worthy curse-laden moment: Ive filled out a lengthy online form and hit the submit button only to find myself staring back at an empty form peppered with red errors. Has this happened to you? Of course it has. While considering how much I really need to complete this form, I start making notes on how Id design it to be a better experience. Seriously, how many date formats am I going to have to try before I get this sucker right? Do I need to phone a friend? The lack of strong error messaging is a regular issue I encounter as both a user and UX designer. As the bearer of bad news to users, error messaging can be the element that determines whether your app gets a Sale or FAIL. The "Text" (SMS) application on the iPhone uses a custom, semi-transparent view to show its "Sending..." message over the keyboard. I'll show you a simple class that can display semi-transparent loading messages and how you can display messages over the keyboard.
Loading..." messages When waiting for data loaded from the internet, many iPhone applications use a mostly black, semi-transparent view to block the display. Most use a basic "spinner" (UIActivityIndicatorView) to reassure the user that the application is still running, frequently accompanied by "Loading..." text. Despite the prevalence of this type of loading message, it is not a standard control and must be constructed manually.

Binds functions to DOM elements.
Concrete tries to provide a new model of code organisation – a replacement for Object Oriented programming that is focused on adding functions to groups of DOM elements based on the structure and contents of those DOM elements. It’s a merging of the model and view layer that initially seems weird, but can give very powerful results. We’re standing on the shoulders of giants here – combining ideas from Prototype’s behaviour & lowpro and jQuery’s effen & livequery (who themselves stole ideals from Self’s Morphic UI and others), but extending & combining the concepts presented in those tools to provide a complete alternative to traditional OO concepts – self-aware methods, inheritance, polymorphisim and namespacing without a single class definition.

Best Practices for 6 Common User Interface Elements | Webdesigner Depot
http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2009/11/best-practices-for-6-common-user-interface-elements/
The appearance and usability of certain interface elements and functionality are crucial to the success any websites in today’s market. Studies have demonstrated that even a split-second delay in thinking on the user’s part will weaken their perception and interest in a website and ultimately lower the website’s conversion rate. In certain niches and industries, having UI elements that are not obvious in their use may be perfectly acceptable. The blogging and web development industry are perfect examples. But when we design user interfaces for non-tech-savvy audiences—which is usually the case with client work—we have to ensure that certain UI elements do not stray too far from what users are accustomed to. This article discusses some best practices and usability traits of six user interface elements and the conventions for each, so that developers can create user experiences that are both beautiful and simple.

clever signup/login ui
For one of my side projects, Leafy Chat, we have just added the concept of user accounts. This includes the need for registration and log in (as well as log out and forgot password and so on). Leafy Chat only requires an email address and a password for both registration and log in, so it would be great to have some clever way to have both forms on the homepage.
Designing login/signup for a web server
Very smart. Stealing this idea for a current project
Interesting thoughts, but I don't like the end result. People have been trained over the years on how to do login/signup. Putting them both on the same page seems like the right idea, but there's something wrong with this implementation--it looks different from most forms.

"So after probably far too much research, I've come up with the following single register/log in form for Leafy Chat. Log in Sign up The form updates via JavaScript when the user selects a radio button. For the log in form, notice that the submit button says "Log in" and there is a link to retrieve a forgotten password. For the sign up form, the label for the password field prompts the user to "Choose a password" and "Sign up!" while also accepting the terms of service. I like this design because a user can either log in or sign up directly from the homepage and the radio buttons stand out and make the options clear to the user. I love that the page dynamically updates to provide relevant help for the chosen form. Also, the user can easily correct any errors without re-entering their email/password. What do you think?

Understanding jQuery UI widgets: A tutorial Last updated 2009-06-07 This was written largely to help me make sense of using UI to create my own widgets, but I hope it may help others. "Widget" to me means a user-interface element, like a button or something more complicated like a popup date picker, but in jQuery UI terms it means a class, members of which are associated with HTML elements; things like Draggable and Sortable. In fact, not everything that I would have called a widget uses $.widget; the UI datepicker does not.

Schulze describes some of the influences behind the projection prints of NYC. I loved these maps at first sight, but missed this in-depth piece shedding light on some of the thinking behind them.
A great example of the erudition that Schulze and Webb display. "I’ve been observing the look and mechanisms in maps since I began working in graphic design. For individuals, and all kinds of companies, cities are an increasing pre-occupation. Geography is the new frontier. Wherever I look in the tech industry I see material from architects and references and metaphors from the urban realm. Here & There draws from that, and also exploits and expands upon the higher levels of visual literacy born of television, games, comics and print."

Myths & Misconceptions About Grid Systems  • Blog Archive • AisleOne

A few myths and misconceptions about grids exist in the design community that can be detrimental, especially to designers who are new to the subject. I recently read an article, which is no longer online, claiming that grids have disadvantages and it listed the reasons why. As you can guess, I very much disagreed with the entire article and felt that it was providing a lot of bad information on grid systems. All of the listed “disadvantages” were distortions derived from the lack of understanding on how a grid works and functions. In response to that article, here’s my attempt at clearing up this mess. Grids are a design trend. Grids have been in use long before graphic design became a discipline. During the 13th– and 14th-centuries, scribes used the Villard Diagram to organize their handwritten manuscripts. In the 15th-century, Gutenberg and others divided their pages using the Van de Graaf canon. The use of a grid is not a trend, it’s a fundamental skill that designers should pos

Complete Beginner’s Guide to Interaction Design | UX Booth
http://www.uxbooth.com/blog/complete-beginners-guide-to-interaction-design/
Web design has followed a long and windy road from it’s rather modest beginnings. Initially, the term “web designer,” described something much more akin to that of a graphic designer: a designer who concerns themselves with the presentation of text and pictures. Today, however, the majority of websites an applications online are interactive. In turn, modern web designers are called upon to make a number of considerations drastically different than those made by traditional graphic designers. To bridge this gap, we call upon the discipline of interaction design. This article serves as a good jumping off point for people interested in learning more about Interaction Design. To that point, we’ll briefly cover the history, guiding principles, noteworthy contributors, tools, etc. related to this fascinating discipline. Even if you’re an interaction designer yourself, give the article a read and share your thoughts in the comments below.

It’s far less cluttered than the regular Times web site layout, and it feels faster. Cutting-edge on the tech side, too: in Safari it displays headlines and sub-heads using the same fonts as the print edition, thanks to the new CSS @font-face property and TypeKit."

Designing and Engineering Time
When you need to choose which part of your application to focus on speeding up, understanding where and why users will perceive performance problems is key. You can't and shouldn't optimize everything. Remember, perception is reality. No mater what your metrics say, if the user thinks your application is slow, it is.

The 7 signs your UI was created by a programmer
http://www2.voyce.com/index.php/2009/09/14/the-7-signs-your-ui-was-created-by-a-programmer/
“Are you sure you don’t want to lose your changes?” Err… what? No. I mean YES. Oh sh*t.
Do you suspect a programmer may have put together the terrible user interface on that “enterprise” software you’re forced to use every day? There are some give-away indicators. Look out for them in your software, hunt down the developer and force them to read a book about user interface design. If you’re suitably senior, force them to a) improve it, or even better b) get someone with real UI experience to fix it.
Ian Voyce, 2009-09-14
The 7 signs your UI was created by a programmer. Not really fair on programmers, but fun nonetheless.

http://lukew.com/ff/entry.asp?968
Though most people wouldn't consider Apple's Web site an important online destination, November saw Apple in the top ten list of US Web sites. 62 million Internet users visited Apple online during the month with an average of 1 hour and 18 minutes spent per user. By comparison, Google had 155 million unique visitors in November.

Using this visualization, Bruno confirmed that about 10% of users couldn't see the download button without scrolling, and thus never noticed it. 10% may not sound like a lot, but in this context it turns out to mean a significant number of people weren't downloading Google Earth. Using this data, the team was able to redesign the page to good effect.

Adding Depth with Pixel Perfect Line Work | Web Design Ledger
http://webdesignledger.com/tips/adding-depth-with-pixel-perfect-line-work
A pixel is a single point in a raster image
So how can one lone pixel have an impact on a web design? It probably can’t. However, if you extend that pixel in one direction, it becomes a line, and in the hands of a masterful designer with an attention for subtle detail, the 1px line is a powerful design element. It can be used in many different ways, but in this article we’re going to take a look at how pixel perfect line work can add depth to a design.
5 Sickening Habits of Mainstream Websites
http://www.techcult.com/5-sickening-habits-of-mainstream-websites/
So true! Especially #5.. I hate that! :O
Oh man I TOTALLY agree with #1 - I hate being forced to click for multiple page articles like that - what a waste of my time. I live in a rural area and don't have the fastest internet - waiting for each new page to load makes me more and more frustrated and less and less likely to finish the article. At the very least, offer a "view on one page" option like some sites do. On some sites, I've used the print version to view articles on one page and not interrupt my reading, but not all sites work that way, either. Please - just stop with the gratuitous multiple pages people!
I understand the marketing incentives for all of these tactics, but I have to admit that they are something that must drive non-marketers crazy.
Websites have some impractical, clunky designs. Let's aim for streamlining designs to facilitate easier web browsing and better information layout. I hate seeing poor website design. It tastes like farts. Farts, farts, farts, farts, farts!

It is not uncommon for companies to sink large amounts of money into obtaining traffic to their websites in an attempt to increase conversions. Some of their money might go towards search engine optimization and some might go towards pay per click or search engine marketing. Little do they know their problem might not be about getting more traffic. The real problem could be that they have a poor call to action.

explanation of pros & cons of sketching wireframes vs. computer, plus computer apps that look sketchy. p: Sketchy wireframes allow practitioners to guide creativity and problem solving in the early stages of projects, rather than getting lost in a sea of documentation. Hopefully, this trend will continue as software manufacturers focus on enhancing their tools for creating computer-based sketchy wireframes.
"...there is a growing trend toward hand-drawn [wireframe] styles, as evidenced by an expanding amount of literature and workshops on the subject. This is a positive step in the evolution of our field. Sketchy wireframes allow practitioners to guide creativity and problem solving in the early stages of projects, rather than getting lost in a sea of documentation."

These allow computer wireframes to look more like quick, hand-drawn sketches while retaining the reusability and polish that we expect from digital artifacts." A Closer Look at Facebook's New Privacy Options
http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/a_closer_look_at_facebooks_new_privacy_options.php
Chances are you wouldn't tell grandma about the wild party you went to last Saturday night. Likewise, you might have spent Sunday evening at home knittin' a mitten ...
This newest change in the privacy options for sharing content on Facebook represents a major change to the nature of communicating on the site. If it's implemented well it could make a dramatic difference in the way people use the site. Given the change underway and the company's move to lobby governments around the world in favor of its privacy philosophy, we think it would be a good idea to have a more thorough public conversation about what that philosophy is.

The web form has been one of the most discussed elements in web design for more than ten years now. We can’t help it. Call-to-action functionality often leads users to a form; purchases are made using forms; users register or subscribe using forms — the uses for forms are endless. While it is fairly easy to slap together a form in HTML, it’s not as easy to code, style, and design your form in a manner that makes it usable and accessible to the majority of users. Since forms play such a large role in website conversions and success rates, the tips below, as well as the resources provided at the end of this article, should prove valuable for developers creating and coding web forms.

This jQuery plugin is an attempt to recreate Google's imageless buttons and prove that it doesn't take a whole team of engineers and an endless cycle of code revision and quality control (their own words) to pull this off. I don't know how Google did it, but my buttons automatically adapt to paddings and other styling you wish to use. They allow for a lot of stylistic customisatoin via a few lines of css while keeping all the display critical css rules hidden deep inside the plugin.

Phil Gyford tested a small collection of PDA and smartphone gadgets to see which of their methods of input was quickest. He tested six input method: Apple Newton handwriting recognition (1997); Palm Vx Graffiti (1999); Palm Treo 650’s hardware QWERTY keyboard (2004); Apple iPhone 3G’s software QWERTY keyboard (2009); old-fashioned Pen & Paper; a full-size QWERTY keyboard. He copied out 200 plus words. And he did it twice for each input. The results were surprising. Palm Graffiti was surprisingly slow. Handwriting was surprisingly slow. The iPhone soft keyboard was surprisingly fast.

Drag and Drop without Drag and Drop
http://ernestdelgado.com/articles/ddwdd/
Textarea Behavior Something that I never realized before is that text areas are drop targets by default. Using this property alone (without registering drag events on the source elements), we can emulate drag and drop behavior of non-linked images between different documents. If you drag any of the images on the right side to the textarea you will see the url of the image in it. This works in all browsers except, as anyone could expect, in IE, which doesn't allow you to drag images to input fields.

A List Apart: Articles: The Problem with Passwords
http://www.alistapart.com/articles/the-problem-with-passwords/
"Is there a middle path—a way to provide feedback and reduce password errors that doesn’t sacrifice the user experience? At least two design patterns address this issue in offline applications, and with a little JavaScript, we can bring them to the web. [...] The simplest solution is to mask the password by default while giving users a way to switch the field to clear text. [...] Apple adopted an interesting approach. The last letter typed into the field remains visible for a couple of seconds before turning into a dot. This creates an opportunity to catch errors without showing the entire password at once."

Refining Data Tables :: UXmatters
http://www.uxmatters.com/mt/archives/2006/08/refining-data-tables.php
After forms, data tables are likely the next most ubiquitous interface element designers create when constructing Web applications. Users often need to add, edit, delete, search for, and browse through lists of people, places, or things within Web applications. As a result, the design of tables plays a crucial role in such an application’s overall usefulness and usability.

Better User Experience With Storytelling, Part 2 - Smashing Magazine
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2010/02/11/better-user-experience-through-storytelling-part-2/
In the first part of this Better User Experience With Storytelling series, we explored some of the basic structures and story patterns found in myths and religions. We saw how these patterns continued into modern stories such as The Matrix and Star Wars. We also explored some of the basics of bringing storytelling into the user experience process and some places to get started. Concluding this two-part article, we hear from creative professionals who are leading the way in this relatively new world of combining the craft of storytelling with user experience. We’ll also see how storytelling can be applied to more than just interactive experiences: we find it in everything from packaging to architecture.

Ultimate guide to table UI patterns
http://jankoatwarpspeed.com/post/2010/02/26/table-ui-patterns.aspx
Many agree that tables are a phenomenon in user interface design: they are very important parts of user interfaces but often overlooked. Tables show structured data and their purpose is to make that data readable, scannable and easily comparable. The thing is that in many cases tabular data is obscured. This is why tables have bad reputation and many find them boring.

The use of the jQuery library is growing and growing(just released jQuery 1.4), more and more people are using this useful javascript library. This means that more and more useful jQuery tips, tricks and solutions are coming available. That’s why i created a small list of 26 cool and useful jQuery tips, tricks and solutions. jQuery has a lot of very useful plugins that can help you with almost anything, but there are a couple of plugins that aren’t that smart to use, why? Well sometimes 1 or 2 lines of jQuery code can do the same thing(or even better), so why use a big script if you can do the same trick with a small piece of code. As many of you already know, jQuery can do a lot of things in more than just one way, so if you see a tip, trick or solution and think/know this can be done better, smarter or faster please let me know, post and share it in a comment below of just email me this, so that i can use this for part 2.

Good article on ways to design forms for mobile devices
Mobile forms tend to have significantly more constraints than their desktop cousins: screens are smaller; connections are slower; text entry is trickier; the list goes on. So, limiting the number of forms in your mobile applications and websites is generally a good idea. When you do want input from users on mobile devices, radio buttons, checkboxes, select menus and lists tend to work much better than open text fields.

I'm still convinced there is a way to have a civilized discussion online with complete strangers, but we haven't gotten there yet. The only really viable way I can see is heavy-handed moderation. When I say heavy-handed, I mean don't allow users to post "me too!" replies. Don't allow straying wildly off-topic. Don't post threads just to chat in specialized forums. iA » Designing for iPad: Reality Check
http://informationarchitects.jp/designing-for-ipad-reality-check/
With its high pitched light contrast, iPad is a miracle picture book or photo frame—but it (still) doesn’t replace printed matters. If, executed carefully, text on an iPad comes quite close, but it needs a lot of care and specific screen typographic know-how. Web body text sizes (14-16px) feel kind of small on iPad while bigger sizes clash with the canvas dimensions. This leads to all sorts of basic grid restrictions. iPad’s resolution is higher than a regular LCD but still lower than an iPhone which gives the pixel type an unusual “in between” feel.
when you write a text it doesn’t count words but the right column tells you: how much time someone spend to read your text until the cursor position (top number) the total reading time (bottom number)

Utilizing the theory of electrostatics, we have designed a low-cost human-computer interface device that has the ability to track the position of a user's hand in three dimensions. Physical contact is not required and the user does not need to hold a controller or attach markers to their body. To control the device, the user simply waves their hand above it in the air.

Our basic idea: To create an mail-application like interface with an elastic three-column layout that clearly separates filter, information-stream, and reaction: Filter: The left side column works as a sorting instrument Information-Stream: The center column shows the filtered results Reaction: The right side column is used for discussing the individual feed items.

The future of wireframes? « Made by Many
http://madebymany.co.uk/the-future-of-wireframes-001992
I have a love hate relationship with wireframes. In the last 10 years they’ve been a part of every web project I’ve worked on. There have been times when I can’t imagine how we would have solved a particular problem without them. Yet there are also times when I’ve been completely exasperated at the amount of time and energy they’ve consumed, seemingly to very little reward...
It’s time designers stepped up to the plate and claimed wireframes as their own.

Emotional Interface Design: The Gateway to Passionate Users
We’re changing. Our relationships online and in real life are shifting as we become more public with our private lives. Online social networks have helped our real world social networks transcend time and space making it easy (and seemingly essential) to share the triumphs, tragedies, and trite moments of life. No longer do you simply tell your best friend that you’ve broken up with your boyfriend. It feels natural to many people to tell hundreds of Twitter followers, and Facebook friends. No matter how you feel about the appropriateness of over sharing, the shift towards a public private life is changing our expectations of the relationships we create online. Remember the websites of the late 1990’s and early 2000’s that used formal language to create a professional, guarded persona and brand? The trend was towards the serious, because it seemed like you couldn’t land clients or entice new users if you weren’t stuffy.

Every seasoned developer has one and every young and upcoming developer should be thinking of building one – a good and concise collection of UI controls, components and plugins that you can always rely on in times of need. Of course, there are plenty of great UI frameworks, kits and libraries that you could use, but none will offer you every component and none of them will be tailored to your own personal preferences and needs. Up until a few months ago my controls had been collected and sourced from various frameworks (Prototype, MooTools, jQuery…), upon review it seemed a little out-dated, some components unnecessary and some controls desperately needed updated. It seemed logical to give the collection a fresh outlook and a uniformity under one framework – I chose jQuery. (I have held on to a few controls that have not been built with jQuery, but for the sake of this post I have omitted them). So, here are my 50 Fundamental jQuery Controls and Rich UI Components…

Graphic design has 4 basic principles that appear to varying degrees in all well designed works; Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity. They are there to help guide you in making attractive designs, but I think they can (and should!) be applied when designing user interfaces. This post will show you how. Anyway, I like the acronym!

The Question That Makes Amazon $2.7 Billion Of Revenue
http://www.businessinsider.com/the-magic-behind-amazons-27-billion-dollar-question-2009-3
Since its release in 2007, the last volume of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, has garnered 3,286 reviews from Amazon.com customers. While response has been overwhelmingly positive for the book, several hundred Amazon customers rated the book as mediocre or worse. Because of a very subtle yet clever feature, Amazon makes the best of both the positive and negative reviews easy to find. And that feature, based on our calculations, is responsible for more than $2,700,000,000 of new revenue for Amazon every year. Not bad for what is essentially a simple question: "Was this review helpful to you?"

jLayout — JavaScript Layout Algorithms - bramstein.com
http://www.bramstein.com/projects/jlayout/
Usage
The jLayout JavaScript library provides layout algorithms for laying out components. A component is an abstraction; it can be implemented in many ways, for example as items in a HTML5 Canvas drawing or as HTML elements. The jLayout library allows you to focus on drawing the individual components instead of on how to arrange them on your screen. The library currently provides four layout algorithms: border, which lays out components in five different regions; grid, which lays out components in a user defined grid, flex-grid which offers a grid with flexible column and row sizes, and flow which flows components in a user defined direction. Using the grid and flex-grid algorithms you can also create horizontal and vertical layouts. A jQuery plugin to lay out (X)HTML elements is also available.

This is an information graphic poster illustrating the underlying lifecycle, methods, principles and techniques in a user centred design process where the visual part is only the tip of the iceberg. This project is the result of my work experience at City ID, an information design studio with international reputation. The poster sums up many of the things that I’ve learnt during my time working with them. It also draws inspiration from practitioners who I admire and from a Digital Media module that I took at the Zurich University of the Arts in Switzerland which was taught by visiting lecturer and user experience designer Eva-Lotta Lamm.

Based on iOS4, it includes all the elements you need to design proof-of-concepts or production ready assets. Previous versions of this file we’re riddled with issues like blurry edged buttons and incorrect “bevels”. These issues have been addressed as best they can using Photoshop’s shape layers and layer styles. If you’re modifying any of the vector elements be sure the shapes are sitting on full pixels or your assets will begin to look blurry.

ignore the code: Gestures

@flo_muc problem 1 is no common vocabulary, problem 2 is UI that doesn't show verbs. @LKM just wrote about just that http://ignco.de/290 – Duncan Wilcox  (duncanwilcox) http://twitter.com/duncanwilcox/statuses/14697678481

Way back when, computers used to only have command line interfaces. To get a PC to do anything at all, people had to memorize commands, and type them in correctly. But forcing people to memorize commands is not particularly user friendly. As a result, few people knew how to use computers, or wanted to learn. When graphical user interfaces became popular, people didn’t have to memorize commands anymore. Instead, everything they could do was shown on their screen. «Memorizing» was replaced with «recognizing». No longer did people have to memorize «cp» if they wanted to duplicate a file; they just had to look through the «File» menu and recognize the «Duplicate» command.
"In a way, gestural user interfaces are a step back, a throwback to the command line. Gestures are often not obvious and hard to discover; the user interface doesn’t tell you what you can do with an object. Instead, you have to remember which gestures you can use, the same way you had to remember the commands you could use in a command line interface."

Describes principled ways to solve common user interface design problems related to search, faceted navigation and discovery.
The Endeca User Interface Design Pattern Library (UIDPL) is the result of the collective work of Endeca's User Experience Team and numerous others at Endeca. We began creating and using an internal UIDPL approximately three years ago to capture and share lessons learned from our work and the experiences of our customers and partners on a wide variety of search and discovery problems and applications. Our ultimate goal was to create this publically accessible and living UIDPL to openly share our ideas and promote community dialogue about how to design great search and discovery experiences. While several other excellent UI pattern libraries exist today, our focus is on defining principled ways to solve common user interface design problems and opportunities related to search, faceted navigation, and information discovery.
